
PAN 2.0 is an upgraded version of the existing/old Permanent Account Number (PAN) system, which aims at creating a seamless, digital experience for the taxpayers.
The PAN 2.0 initiative will consolidate core and non-core PAN/TAN services into a single online platform, in line with government’s Digital India programme.
The system will have a centralised portal for all PAN/TAN related services as well as PAN validations services and also enhanced cybersecurity to protect user’s data.
- Why PAN 2.0, a background
Indian Government has issued has approx. 78 lakh PAN cards, of which 98% are of individuals. With the advancement of technology, it was required that government take initiative to not just handle such large number of PAN card’s crucial data but also to protects it in an improved manner from cyber threats. Further, government also felt the need to establish a common business identifier, a unified portal for all PAN/TAN related services and to have a better grievance redressal system. All these led to the new initiative of PAN 2.0.
Government plans to invest approx. INR 1435 crores on PAN 2.0 and related infrastructure.
For tax payers, it will be free of cost to upgrade to new PAN 2.0 with QR code.

1. Unified Portal: A Single digital platform to have PAN/TAN/TIN related services and PAN validation services. Which will make it convenient for taxpayers and authorities.
2. Enhanced Security Features: In today’s world data is the asset and it is very important to safeguard the confidential data of taxpayers. Therefore, government has plans to enhance cybersecurity of the taxpayer’s data in PAN2.0 ecosystem.
3. Improved Operational Efficiency: Government plans to upgrade current PAN ecosystem with the advanced technology to improve operational efficiency.
4. QR code integration: The upgraded PAN cards will have QR code on it for quick access and validation of taxpayer’s details.

Will you need a new PAN Card/ PAN 2.0
Union Minister Mr. Ashwini Vaishnav has clarified that existing PAN cards will remain valid and it is not a compulsory upgrade. However, taxpayers will have an option to upgrade their PAN Card with a new QR code features at no additional cost.
When can you upgrade to new PAN Card /PAN 2.0
Government has not yet announced any rollout date for PAN 2.0.
